R&B mastering

R&B mastering that holds the vocal and the low end.

$70/track
24-48 hour turnaround
3 revisions included

Modern R&B lives in the space between vocal intimacy and low-end weight. The voice has to be the center — every choice has to make room for it — and the low end has to have presence without crowding the vocal. The translation has to hold up on streaming, AirPods, club systems, car speakers.

That's R&B mastering. Same engineer, same room, $70/track.

What R&B mastering needs

R&B in 2026 splits across a wide range — alternative R&B, neo-soul, trap-influenced R&B, pop-R&B crossover — but the mastering priorities are consistent across the spectrum.

If your mix already lands on those priorities, mastering supports the choices you made. If it doesn't, that's where the work is.

What's included

Same as every Venia mastering booking.

If the song has competing elements (very prominent backing vocals, layered low end, complex stereo production), stem mastering is the upgrade — gives me more control over the vocal-to-instrumental balance after the mix is locked.

Pricing

$70 per track. Same price as every Venia mastering tier — R&B, pop, hip-hop, indie, electronic, country, folk. The price is the price.

If you've got an EP or album in the works, ask about the EP/album bundle (EPBUNDLE — $10 off per track on orders of 4+ tracks). Sign up for Studio Notes at the bottom of this page for a 20% off welcome code on your first track.

How it works

  2. Book the track. Once you're ready, book at $70/track. Drop the full mix into the upload link in your confirmation.
  3. 24–48 hour turnaround. First delivery as a streaming master WAV. If you need MP3 alongside, that's the small WAV+MP3 upgrade.
  4. 3 revisions included. Hear something you want different? Send notes.
  5. Release-ready files. Final master plus metadata for your distributor.

R&B mastering FAQ

How loud should my R&B master be? Most modern R&B sits between -10 and -8 LUFS integrated for the streaming master. Vocal-ballad-leaning R&B sits closer to -11 (more dynamic range preserved for the verse-chorus arc). Trap-influenced R&B can push to -8 for genre character. Spotify normalizes everyone to -14 anyway, so loudness on disk doesn't translate to playback loudness — it just costs you dynamics if you overdo it.

Is R&B mastering different from hip-hop mastering? Yes — same loud-genre family, different priorities. Hip-hop is built around the low end (kick + 808 + drum programming). R&B is built around the vocal, with the low end supporting. Mastering decisions follow the priorities — R&B masters tend to shape the 2–5 kHz vocal-presence range more carefully and use lighter limiting to preserve vocal dynamics, while hip-hop masters push low-end weight and accept tighter dynamics for genre loudness.

How should I prep my R&B mix for mastering? Same fundamentals as any genre — see the pre-mastering checklist — plus two R&B-specific things. (1) Confirm your vocal isn't masked by the instrumental in any section (use a quick A/B by muting the instrumental to hear the vocal alone). (2) Check the low end mono-folds without losing punch — the free Mono Compatibility Checker shows this in 30 seconds.

Do I need stem mastering for R&B? Most R&B singles master fine as stereo. Consider stem mastering when (1) the vocal needs more independent control than the stereo master allows, (2) the song has very prominent backing vocals or layered harmonies that want their own treatment, or (3) the low end is doing complex work that needs separate shaping from the rest of the mix.

Can you match my reference track? References inform every master. Send the reference along with the mix — tonal balance, loudness, and dynamics from the reference shape the master without copying. If you want a closer look at how your mix compares to a reference before booking, the free Reference Track Matcher runs that comparison in-browser.

Vocal mastering vs full-mix mastering — what's the difference? "Vocal mastering" usually means a separate processing pass focused only on the vocal stem before the full master. That's a stem-mastering workflow (and at Venia, it falls under the stem mastering service). Full-mix mastering treats the finished stereo mix as one unit and shapes it as a whole. For most R&B singles, full-mix mastering covers it; vocal-focused work is the upgrade when the stereo master can't get the vocal right.
