Why it matters
Indie and singer-songwriter mastering
is about what you don't do.

The instinct in mastering is to add — more loudness, more presence, more everything. For indie and singer-songwriter music, the right move is often restraint. Preserving what makes the track feel real is harder than pushing it loud.

🎭
Dynamic range preserved
Over-compression is the enemy of emotional music. The quiet parts need to feel quiet. The loud parts need to earn it. I use limiting conservatively so the natural shape of the performance stays intact.
🎙
Vocal as the centrepiece
In singer-songwriter music the vocal is everything — tone, breath, intimacy. Mastering EQ has to enhance presence without stripping warmth. Every decision I make is checked against how the vocal sits.
🎸
Acoustic instrument clarity
Acoustic guitar, piano, strings — these instruments have complex harmonic content that gets easily smeared by heavy processing. Careful, surgical EQ keeps them sounding natural and open.
📻
Translation across playback
A lot of indie music gets listened to on earbuds, in quiet rooms, late at night. The master needs to sound right in those contexts — not just on a big system. I reference on small speakers throughout.
🔇
Appropriate loudness
Indie and folk don't need to compete with pop for loudness — and trying to do so usually hurts them. I target loudness that feels competitive on streaming without squashing the life out of quieter arrangements.
👂
A musician at the controls
I'm a musician who understands what it means to write a song that matters to you. That informs every decision — not just the technical ones. I'm not treating your track like a technical exercise.

How it works
Simple, personal, and fast
1
Export your mix as a WAV
24-bit WAV, no limiter on the master bus, peaks around –6 dBFS. If you need help with this step I'll walk you through it.
2
Send it with a bit of context
Tell me what you're going for — feel, reference tracks, where it's going. Singer-songwriter music especially benefits from having that creative context upfront.
3
I listen carefully and master it
Every track gets listened to in full — multiple passes. I'm as focused on what to leave alone as what to improve. If anything in the mix concerns me, I'll mention it before starting.
4
Your master back in 24–48hrs
A streaming-ready WAV with the dynamics, warmth, and clarity your music deserves. Three rounds of revisions included — feedback is always welcome.

Common questions
Indie & singer-songwriter mastering — FAQ
Will mastering make my track sound over-produced?▼
Not when it's done with restraint. Over-production in mastering usually comes from heavy limiting, excessive EQ, or trying to make something louder than the music wants to be. My approach with indie and singer-songwriter material is conservative — the goal is to bring out what's already there, not transform it into something it's not.
My track is very quiet and dynamic — should I be worried about mastering loudness?▼
No — dynamic music masters differently and that's a good thing. Quiet, dynamic tracks don't need to compete with pop for loudness on streaming. Spotify and Apple Music normalize playback anyway, so a more dynamic master often sounds better in that environment than an over-limited one.
I recorded at home — will mastering make it sound professional?▼
Mastering can significantly improve a home recording — but the mix matters. If there are fundamental issues (very muddy low end, harsh frequencies, a vocal that's too buried or too loud), those should be addressed in the mix first. If you send it over as a free sample, I'll give you an honest read on where things stand before you commit.
Can you master for vinyl as well as streaming?▼
Yes — vinyl mastering is offered at the same price ($70/track). Indie and folk music often sounds beautiful on vinyl and the mastering approach is different — more dynamic, different EQ curve, careful stereo imaging for the cutting lathe. Just let me know when you order.
How much does indie mastering cost?▼
$70/track, includes 16-bit WAV + MP3 delivery (24-bit available on request). Three rounds of revisions included with every order. First-time clients can request a free mastered sample to hear the result before committing.
